Money Saving Tips
July 11, 2016

Simple. Thrifty. Living.

According to the Real Weddings Survey performed by The Knot and the Wedding Channel, the average cost of a wedding ceremony in the United States is around $28,427. Of course, the wedding ceremony is an individualized expression of the personalities and priorities of the couple tying the knot, and not every couple ends up spending that amount to get the wedding of their dreams. It is possible to achieve a priceless wedding for much less than the national average. These budget-saving strategies can make a special day memorable without spending a huge amount of money.

It’s easy to look glamorous for less by purchasing a white party dress or cocktail dress to double as a wedding gown. Long trains and white gauze aren’t an absolute must. Most brides can create an elegant look for less money using a simple dress and coordinating pieces of jewelry. There are plenty of floor-length white or ivory dresses that cost much less than traditional bridal gowns.

A wedding date in November is usually easier on a wedding budget than a ceremony in June. Since many weddings get scheduled in June, the demand and pricing for venues go up during this highly sought-after time period. Also, Saturdays are in high demand. It’s much more budget-friendly to get married on any other day of the week.

Not every wedding is held in a church or an in-demand venue. Some of the most beautiful ceremonies have taken place at restaurants, parks or farms. The trick is to think out of the box when it comes to selecting a wedding venue. Places that aren’t in high demand will be much less expensive than more popular venues.

It’s easy to save a bundle by using a fake wedding cake. This might seem like cheating, but lots of couples are using this money-saving strategy. The fake confection stays on display while wedding guests enjoy slices of a delicious sheet cake served from the kitchen. It’s doubtful anyone will notice or care, and a sheet cake is much cheaper than an elaborately designed wedding cake.

When it comes to purchasing flowers for your wedding it’s easy to overspend. By sticking with in-season options you will cut your cost significantly. If you are set on a specific type of flower, use that for your bridal bouquet and switch up the centerpieces. Additionally, most florists will work with you. Let them know your floral budget up front, or better yet, the lowest end of your budget. This will allow for some leeway when choosing the right arrangements for your big day.

Weddings are supposed to be memorable, but that doesn’t mean they have to cost an arm and a leg. Many couples who choose to spend less want to save their money for long-term investments such as a downpayment on their first home. These helpful hints make it that much easier to avoid spending too much when it isn’t really necessary.
