Of course, the easiest way to pick up rewards from a frequent flyer program is to travel with that airline. The problem is, you would have to travel a lot in order to get enough miles for a free flight. So how can you rack up the points without actually getting on a plane? Here are three good ways to get the most reward miles without traveling:
Most frequent flyer programs have a credit card you can sign up for that will help you get extra miles. Many of these cards come with major intro bonuses that come along with the card. These bonuses are usually a huge amount of miles (10,000 to 40,000, usually) if you spend a certain amount of money within the first three months. For example, the US Airways credit card is now offering 40,000 bonus miles with qualifying transactions. (Check it out here.) If you are going to book a trip anyway, you can use this new credit card to do it and secure the intro bonus at the same time. If you book on the airline with the credit card, you’ll probably get extra bonus miles for that as well.
Now that you have the airline’s credit card, you can make the most of the rewards that the credit card offers. All major airline credit cards will give you a certain amount of miles every time you use the card to make a purchase. It can range from 1x the points to 5x the points for each dollar you spend. You also get rewarded with extra points if you book your plane tickets on the airline’s site with their credit card. To get the most points for your travel, use your credit card to make big purchases. The more money you spend, the more points you get.
Most airline credit cards have a rewards site that can earn you more points when you shop on it. These sites generally offer points for spending money on things you were already go to buy. The shopping portals generally have big name stories like Macy’s and Best Buy, so you can be earning points for things that you were already going to spend money on. Many of these rewards sites also give you extra points for dining out at certain restaurants. Just make sure you go to a participating restaurant and use your airline credit card to pay for the meal, and you should be rewarded with extra miles.
