Simple. Thrifty. Living.

There are two main considerations when choosing the best car insurance. The first is doing what you can to help yourself — for example, by being aware of your credit history — while the second is picking the right policy for your situation, as well as the right company. You should also think about what “best” means for you: Is it wide-ranging insurance or the least-expensive insurance possible?

To receive the best car insurance, you must have good credit. Of course, top-notch credit is not realistic for many people. What you can do, though, is be aware of your credit history and credit score. This awareness will help you understand if the insurance quotes you get later are at least accurate and among the best you can get for your situation.

Another way to get the best auto insurance is to choose a vehicle that has relatively good numbers for safety, damage and repair costs. Also, insurance tends to cost less for older cars, but newer cars with certain safety features will also keep your premium low.

When choosing car insurance, always compare quotes and estimates from at least three insurers. Keep the following factors in mind as you choose your policy.

Many factors, such as your age, gender, driving history and credit history, influence the price you are quoted for auto insurance. Some insurers give more weight to some factors than to others, which is why it is essential to get multiple quotes. Your coverage level also affects the price, but more on that later.

Your price depends in part on your deductible. The higher the deductible amount, the less money you pay every month in premiums. If you drive safely and have a nearly spotless record, it may be worth your while to request a higher deductible.

Many insurers offer discounts, although some discount programs are more comprehensive than others. Bundling multiple policies, safe records and defensive driving classes are examples of common discounts. Having safety and anti-theft features on your car also tend to help.

You should have at least the minimum amount of coverage your state requires. Most often, this is liability insurance to a certain amount. For the best insurance, you should get more coverage, particularly if your car is new. Opt for collision and comprehensive protection in addition to liability coverage. Assess your coverage every year; as your car gets older, you may want to adjust coverage levels. In fact, be wary of over-the-top coverage, always make sure you are purchasing just the right amount of coverage.

Look at how you can file claims. Is the process clearly outlined on the insurer’s website? Are there options for contact outside of regular business hours? Customer service covers these areas and more. For instance, some people prefer a local office while others are fine with an online insurer.
