Best Things to Buy in August

Simple. Thrifty. Living.

The heat of the summer is going nowhere, there are still a number of beach days left and the idea of donning sweaters and boots are far from one’s mind. But retailers are already gearing up for their fall season. As retailers make room for their fall inventory there are a number of discounts to be had. So what are the best items to purchase during the month of August?

Parents, you are in luck! Laptop prices drop this month just in time to send your child to college! Experts have found that consumers will save up to 25 percent off retail prices in August and early September. Major retailers such as Best Buy and Walmart fight for consumers’ back to school dollars (especially when it comes to big ticket items), so they tend to run a number of promotions that will help keep you within budget.

With kids getting ready to go back to school, retailers are luring in consumers with big back-to-school savings. Sales include:

  • School Supplies –– Now is the time to purchase school supplies. August tends to have the lowest prices year round. So if your child will need a replacement binder come December, now is the time to stock up.
  • Children’s Clothing –– Along with the back-to-school supplies, you will find deep discounts on kids’ fall clothing. Retailers such as Gap and Old Navy offer up to 40 percent off regular priced items throughout August.

Are you in an area where summer temperatures linger? August and September are the cheapest months to purchase summer clothing, so take advantage of retailers’ summer clearance events for those late summer trips. Or stock up on those shorts and tees for next summer.

With the grape harvest around the corner (late fall) wineries start to put last year’s inventory on sale to make room for all the new wine. The deepest discounts will be found at your local winery, however some major grocers will see the trickle down effect.

Although it’s not ideal to upgrade your patio set so late into the summer, by doing so you will score the lowest prices all year. If this August is anything like the last one, consumers will see deep discounts from retailers such as Target. Experts expect consumers to see 50 percent to 75 percent discounts on all patio furniture.

In the market for a new grill? Now is the time to buy. Consumers will see 25 percent to 60 percent off a number of grills. Find discounts on all major brands, as well as barbecue accessories. But don’t fret if you don’t find the right grill for you, prices remain low into September, with many retailers such as Home Depot offering major Labor Day sales.
