Money Saving Tips
February 2, 2016

Simple. Thrifty. Living.

It’s February, the shock of the holiday bills has worn off, Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and there are big savings to be had. However, that doesn’t mean everything on sale reaches the lowest price of the year. Here are the top buys for this month:

You won’t get rock-bottom prices when it comes to the typical Valentines Day gifts like jewelry, flowers and chocolate. But you will receive modest savings, especially if you purchase your gifts ahead of time. Online jewelers such as Kay Jewelers are offering discounts on a variety of items. Major florists like FTD and 1-800-Florals are offering deep discounts if you order early.

Taxes are due in just two short months, so online tax services are fighting for everyone’s business. TurboTax is offering 100 percent free filing this year on both federal and state taxes for 1040EZ/A filers. H&R Block is offering deep discounts on their tax filing services as well. But hurry, you won’t see these deals come April.

Are you in the market for a new TV? Now is the time to buy — the Consumer Electronics Show took place early last month and revealed all the new models. Retailers are slashing prices on last year’s models to make room for the new. According to experts, prices on HDTVs will drop by 60 percent or more this month. Paired with Super Bowl sales, you’re sure to get the best price.

Come February winter apparel is on clearance however due to the warm start to this winter season, the clearance racks will be overflowing. That means even deeper discounts than most years, and you could consider waiting for the Presidents’ Day sales for even more savings.

Presidents’ Day is the last big weekend for ski resorts, so many retailers are starting to slash their prices on equipment. In fact, experts say consumers can save up to 60 percent off, so if you’re in need of new equipment now is the time to buy.

Just like January, February is low-season for travel, simply due to the fact that demand is low. Not to mention the drop in oil prices, which can result in lower airfare and cost of road trips. You will also be able to secure upgrades a lot easier this month.

It’s off-season for Broadway, so Broadway and off-Broadway tickets are the lowest price this time of year. You can even get 2-for-1 deals until Feb. 12.
